HTML Web Authoring Course
Course Description
This course provides delegates with the HTML skills required to create web pages. Text editors are used to create the HTML - this is not a course in web publishing tools. The course is mainly practical with plenty of exercises to provide hands on experience. A web server is available to allow delegates to publish their web page.
Course pre-requisites:
It is expected that delegates are familiar with Internet concepts and web browsing.

Introduction to HTML
- HTML authoring: Writing in HTML vs Web authoring packages
- HTML history: HTML versions 2, 3, 3.2, 4. Web browser version
Creating a simple HTML page
- Creating a blank HTML page (HTML, HEAD, TITLE, BODY)
- HTML tags and attributes, line breaks (BR)
- HTML paragraph styles (P, PRE, H1 - H6, DT, DD, BLOCKQUOTE, etc)
- Bulleted and numbered lists (UL, OL, LI), definition lists (DL,DT,DD)
- Paragraph alignment (left, right and center justification)
- Physical and logical styles
- Line breaks and attributes (HR, WIDTH, SIZE, NOSHADE)
Images
- Inserting GIF and JPEG graphics (IMG SRC), which type to use
- Image attributes (ALT, BORDER, HSPACE, VSPACE etc)
- Altering image sizes using HTML / editors (advantages / disadvantages)
- Flow of text around graphics (TOP, BOTTOM, LEFT, RIGHT etc)
Using hyperlinks
- Links to other pages / web sites / email addresses / files
- Links to targets in a page. Images as hyperlinks
Publishing a web page
- Web server directory root (htdocs), executable root (cgi-bin)
- Pros and cons of relative and absolute links
- Publishing your documents on a web server
- Default HTML document (index.html) and user home pages
Fonts, backgrounds and colours
- Fonts (sizes and typefaces) and colours (RGB)
- Page attributes (text, hyperlink, visited link and active link colours)
- Background images
Tables
- Creating simple tables and table headings.
- Table, row, column and cell attributes.
- Column and row spanning, blank cells
Image maps
- Rectangle, circle and polygon hotspots. Tools to help develop coordinates.
- Server and client side image maps. Placing ".MAP" files on HTTP server.
Forms
- Overview of forms, data submitted and executable programs
- Creating text boxes and text areas (names, values, attributes)
- Radio boxes and tick boxes (group names, values)
- Selection and pull down lists
- Hidden forms (passing hidden data to program)
- Form buttons (submit, reset, plain)
- Form actions (example action to quot;mailto:username@server")
- Brief introduction to CGI (using example CGI scripts)
Frames
- Creating pages with frames (FRAMESET, FRAME), frame attributes (names, row & column sizes, immovable frames, borders, scroll bars)
- Alternative pages for non-frame browsers (NOFRAMES)
- Creating hyperlinks to named frames, top page, opening another window
Java applets and plugins
- What is JAVA? Embedding JAVA applets, example JAVA applets
- What are plugins? Installing plugins. Embedding plugins in a page.
Additional HTML
- The META tag, cache expiry times and client pull.
- Introduction to server side includes (SSI)
