SAVE IT Windows Server 2003 MCSE Scheme
PTR offer a SAVE IT MCSE scheme to make achieving the status of MCSE more affordable.
The Exams
To become a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) for Windows Server 2003, delegates need to pass seven separate examinations, 6 (core) network, client and design examinations and one elective examination.
Core Exams:
Network (Compulsory):
- 70-290 Managing & Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment
- 70-291 Implementing, Managing & Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure
- 70-293 Planning & Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure
- 70-294 Planning, Implementing & Maintaining A Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure
Client (One of the following):
- 70-270 Installing, Configuring & Administering Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- 70-210 Installing, Configuring & Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
or
Design (One of the following):
- 70-297 Designing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory & Network Infrastructure
- 70-298 Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network
or
The following Windows 2000 exams can also be counted as a core design exam:
- 70-220 Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network
- 70-221 Designing a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure
- 70-226 Designing Highly Available Web Solutions with Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Technologies
Elective Exams:
There are many possible electives for the MCSE certification.
Here are some of the more popular electives:

- 70-086 Implementing & Supporting Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0
- 70-227 Installing, Configuring & Administering Microsoft Internet Security & Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
- 70-228 Installing, Configuring & Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
- 70-229 Designing and Implementing Databases with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
- 70-284 Implementing & Managing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
- 70-285 Designing a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Organisation
- 70-299 Implementing & Administering Security in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network
The following core exams can be counted as electives if not already counted as core:
- 70-297 Designing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory & Network Infrastructure
- 70-298 Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network
The following CompTIA certifications also qualify as electives for MCSE:
- CompTIA Security+
The PTR SAVE IT Windows Server 2003 MCSE Conditions
The PTR MCSE Passport entitles you to sit eight courses in total (nine if you wish to attain an MCSE specialisation, which is explained at the end of this document). Six are compulsory and for the other two you can select. This will offer you the quickest route to becoming an MSCE. There are other routes provided by the many electives that can be chosen from, but these will not be covered by the PTR scheme, only those listed below.
Each course can be sat only once. The course dates can be selected from the PTR Schedule and must be taken within 12 calendar months of the scheme being purchased.
All courses are attended by a single named delegate.
Payment must be received in full prior to the start of the first course.
No refund or re-sit will be offered in the event the delegate does not pass the associated exams.
The PTR SAVE IT Windows Server 2003 MCSE Courses
The following six courses are compulsory
To achieve the required level to take the core exams 70-290, 70-291, 70-270, 70-293,70-294.
- Managing & Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Environment (exam 70-290) – 5 days
- Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure: Network Hosts (exam 70-291) – 2 days
- Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure: Network Services (exam 70-291) – 5 days
- Installing, Administering & Configuring Microsoft Windows XP Professional (exam 70-270) – 2 days
- Planning & Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure (exam 70-293) – 5 days
- Planning, Implementing & Maintaining A Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure (exam 70-294) – 5 days
This will leave you with one further core exam to choose.
- Designing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory & Network Infrastructure (exam 70-297) – 5 days
- Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network (exam 70-298) – 3 days
This will leave you with one further elective exam to choose.
To prepare for the extra elective examination, select ONE of the following courses:
- Deploying & Managing ISA Server 2000 (exam 70-227) – 3 days
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Administration (exam 70-228) – 5 days
- Micrososft SQL Server 2000 Database Design (exam 70-229) – 5 days
- Microsoft Exchange 2003 System Administration (exam 70-284) – 5 days
- Implementing & Administering Security in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network (exam 70-299) – 5 days
Or one of the following of they have not already been counted as a core exam:
- Designing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory & Network Infrastructure (exam 70-297) – 5 days
- Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network (exam 70-298) – 3 days
The suggested path to MCSE
Sit the courses over a period of time between 6 and 12 months. Delegates should allocate some self-study time following each of the courses. The purchase of a self-study guide book is recommended to complement the training material.
Sit the following course first:
This course is a condensed course from 8 days of training and, therefore, a certain amount of self-study is required to complement it. To facilitate this a free MCP CBT package for exam 70-290 (with a value of £316.28 and including a Test Simulator) will be included with the course material for this course.
Then sit exam 70-290 after a period of self-study.
Next sit the following 2 courses:
- Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure: Network Hosts (exam 70-291) – 2 days
- Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure: Network Services (exam 70-291) – 5 days
Then sit exam 70-291 after a period of self-study.
Next sit the following course:
Then sit exam 70-270 after a period of self-study.
Next sit the following course:
- Planning & Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure (exam 70-293) – 5 days
Then sit exam 70-293 after a period of self-study.
Next sit the following course:
Then sit exam 70-294 after a period of self-study.
Then sit the remaining design course of your choice and sit the associated exam.
Then sit the one extra elective course and take the corresponding exam.
MCSE Specialisations
There are two specialisation MCSE Tracks:
- MCSE Messaging on Windows Server 2003 (Attained by taking the Exchange Server 2003 Elective 70-284)
- MCSE Security on Windows Server 2003 (Attained by taking the Security in Windows 2003 Environment Elective 70-299)
The following two elective exams must be taken to gain this specialisation:
- 70-284 Implementing & Managing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
- 70-285 Designing a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Organisation
MCSE Security on Windows Server 2003
The following two elective exams must be taken to gain this specialisation:
- 70-227 Installing, Configuring & Administering Microsoft Internet Security & Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
