Course Description

The objective of this course is to provide a technical and practical overview of Voice over IP (VoIP). The course identifies the main elements of the technology and presents them in an accessible format.

At the end of the course delegates will be conversant with VoIP technology and understand the role of VoIP in their or their customer's company and marketplace.

An understanding of the delegate's company network would be an advantage or that of a client company. This is not mandatory as case studies can be provided.

Course pre-requisites:

Delegates should have a good understanding of Local Area Network (LAN) and Internet Protocol concepts such as that provided by the PTR Introduction to Data Communications & Networking course. Knowledge of the BASIC workings of a PBX is assumed.

Introduction

  • The role of VoIP within their organisation
  • How VoIP handles calls compared to traditional Voice Circuits
  • How VoIP is carried through a network
  • The role of Q.931
  • How TCP, UDP and socket numbers are used in a VoIP environment

  • The requirement for standards in VoIP
  • The use of H.323
  • The use of the G.700 series Codecs
  • The use of the H.260 series Codecs
  • How other standards are required in a complete system
