Email Security - Threats & Protection - Office 365

Email Security Threats

While many organisations have moved over to “The Cloud” many are nervous of making the move with security being the number one concern. I came across a couple of interesting articles last week, which I thought I would share with you as they highlight some common IT security concerns among IT Security Managers and present some possible solutions to protect your company from common threats.

One of the biggest IT security threats comes from email as all businesses communicate largely through email – internally and externally. New forms of attack on businesses are continually being developed and are increasingly complex.

A Mimecast report produced in 2016 reveals that 83% of IT Security Managers (600 surveyed) consider email to be one of the most common sources of attack. The full Mimecast report can be found here.

Another report from ProofPoint also highlights email as being a top threat to security. The full ProofPoint report can be found here.

Microsoft offer a Cloud platform with Office 365

Office 365 has built-in data protection features and has been built around how people work, offering visiblitiy into risk and suggesting solutions.

Office 365 Security operates at the Physical, Logical and Data Layers to provide a robust and secure solution protecting against data breeches and attacks.

The full details of what Office 365 can offer with regard to protection, prevention, detection, response and recovery are outlined in this Email Security Report by Microsoft. The report ends with the following text:

“Your business continuity is on the line. Microsoft’s Office 365 cloud-based subscription service gives organizations instant access to the latest versions of all the core Microsoft Office applications, as well as Skype for Business, OneDrive for Business, and Exchange Online. As email attacks become more complex, Office 365 takes a comprehensive approach that can help fill gaps in security that often otherwise require multiple vendor solutions. While still designed to integrate with other security vendors’ products when necessary, Office 365 helps safeguard corporate data and defend your organization against cybercrime.”
