It is also an industry standard language adopted by Oracle, MySQL and many other relational database platforms.

The SQL language is made up of a number of sub categories of statements:
- Data Querying Language (DQL): SELECT
- Data Definition Langauge (DML): CREATE, ALTER, DROP
- Data Manupulation Language (DML): INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE
- Data Control Language: GRANT, REVOKE, DENY
Each vendor provides their own unique variant of SQL which offers the base SQL language statements but also a rich library of built in functions and a scripting language.
Microsoft's SQL offering is Transact SQL (TSQL).
The SELECT statement is the most impoirtant statement in the SQL Scripting language as it enables us to ask questions of our databases and retrieve selective records and attributes from our vast data repositiories.
